Bathing HouseThe bathing house was built in 1912 for outpatient treatment with salt water bathing, inhalation rooms etc. The colonnade front is evidence of the grand spa days in Bad Kreuznach, when the town was valued by aristocrats and rich citizens because of the healing powers of its salt water and radon. Nowadays the bathing house is home to one of the best and most varied sauna landscapes in Germany.
Bridge HousesThe bridge houses, built from 1480 onwards, are an architectural delicacy and symbol of Bad Kreuznach. These half-timbered houses which were built on the pillars of the old Nahe bridge (around 1300) form the centuries old silhouette and are the connection between the old and new town. The most impressive view of the bridge houses is from the Geißenbrücke (bridge) over the mill pond next to St. Paul’s church. The characteristic method of construction is easily recognisable from here. The parts of the houses jutting out are supported by wooden buttresses which means the houses are virtually unaffected by flooding. A cannon ball is mounted in front of one of the bridge houses which is reputed to be from the bombardment by Swedish troops during the Thirty Years’ War.
Castle KauzenburgAt the beginning of the 13th century the counts of Sponheim built castle Kauzenburg around which the historical new town grew. The troops of King Ludwig XIV destroyed the castle in 1689. After various alterations it was given its final appearance by the architect Gottfried Böhm (1972). Tip: On the way up to the Kauzenburg you pass the tea temple offering one of the most beautiful views of Bad Kreuznach.
Corn market square with corn market fountainThe corn market fountain is the main attraction of the corn market square on which fruit and grain markets have been held for over 200 years. The fountain was created by sculptor Karl Steiner in 1975. It shows well-known and highly respected citizens from the town’s past. The “Schandarm” (gendarme) Gustav Hermann Wiechert, a Prussian police officer, was fond of wine and was the terror of the female stallholders. “De Gulasch” alias Heinrich Saam was known for his love of hot spicy goulash. “Debbedee” or Fritz Braun was known to many locals and friends as a newspaper salesman, an extra in the spa theatre, theatre helper and usher. Until 1929 and in the company of a cat “Es Probecks Mari” or “Die Marri mit de Feierblos” alerted the population to fires with her “toot”. “Es Gänzje”, Franz Ganz was a slightly built travelling musician, delighting the young and old with his barrel organ.
Egg market and monument to Michel MortIn the middle of the egg market there is a group of statues showing how Bad Kreuznach’s master butcher Michel Mort saves the town’s ruler Count of Sponheim during the battle of Sprendlingen in the year 1279. Robert Cauer created the sculpture in 1902. He was a descendant of the successful Cauer dynasty of sculptors whose members worked in Bad Kreuznach for 200 years without interruption as sculptors of international standing and had studios in different European capitals.
